The Security Service of Ukraine, SBU, has for the first time struck Russia’s “shadow fleet” tanker using aerial drones, a source within the agency has told local media. The tanker was struck in neutral waters of the Mediterranean Sea, more than 2,000 kilometers from Ukrainian territory. The tanker QENDIL sustained critical damage and can no longer be used for its intended purpose. At the time of the operation, the Russian vessel was empty and not transporting any cargo, the source said, meaning the strike posed no environmental risk to the area.“Russia used this tanker to bypass sanctions and generate revenue for its war against Ukraine. From the standpoint of international law and the laws and customs of war, it was therefore a fully legitimate target for the SBU. The enemy must realize that Ukraine will not stop and will strike anywhere in the world, wherever it may be,” an SBU source stated. The interlocutor added that the tanker sustained critical damage in the attack and is no longer fit for operational use. Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of oil tankers, viewing them as a critical component of Moscow’s ability to bypass international sanctions and finance its war effort. These vessels, often operating under flags of convenience and opaque ownership structures, have been used to transport Russian oil outside established regulatory frameworks. Ukrainian security officials argue that disrupting this network is a legitimate military objective, as revenues generated through shadow fleet operations directly support Russia’s military campaign. Earlier, SBU struck two Russian “shadow fleet” tankers – Kairos and Virat – in the Black Sea with Sea Baby naval drones equipped with an enhanced warhead.
