The Russian army has almost completely abandoned the so-called "meat assault" tactics, in which command would launch large waves of infantry into the attack, attempting to wear down Ukrainian defenses with numerical superiority. Now, the occupiers are increasingly using small sabotage and assault groups of two to four soldiers, attempting to infiltrate Ukrainian positions undetected, according to The Telegraph. As the publication notes, in the first years of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army attempted to advance by relying on massive attacks with manpower and armored vehicles. This tactic cost the Kremlin enormous losses: since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Russian army has lost an estimated 1.3 million troops, of which approximately 325,000 were killed. However, technological advances have significantly changed the battlefield. Drones constantly patrol the front lines and quickly identify large troop concentrations, while electronic warfare systems make it difficult to coordinate attacks. The article states that this has made traditional "human waves" less effective. Keir Giles, an analyst with the Russia and Eurasia program at the British think tank Chatham House, explained that Russia’s new tactics are a response to the so-called "transparent battlefield," where any movement is quickly detected using modern technology. "Instead of large groups of Russian soldiers moving forward across open terrain like ‘bullet sponges,’ the current tactics involve slow, stealthy infiltration through gaps in Ukrainian positions along the front line," he said. According to the US-based Institute for the Study of War, in late April, Russian attacks were mostly carried out by platoon-sized forces or even smaller groups. Meanwhile, analysts at the Critical Threats Project reported that Ukrainian forces often detect and engage such small Russian groups, but that completely halting their advance can be difficult. Anton Zemlyanoy, a senior analyst at the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, explained that the new tactics are based on small infantry groups operating in pairs or small teams. Coordination is carried out through assault group commanders, who maintain contact with company or battalion command.
According to him, Russian command posts actively use drones to adjust the actions of such groups and transmit information about the movements of Ukrainian troops. "These small groups try to avoid direct combat and instead bypass Ukrainian fortifications, penetrating deeper into the defensive lines," Zemlyanoy noted. The publication notes that after penetrating between Ukrainian positions, these groups fortify themselves in abandoned buildings, plantings, or shell craters and await reinforcements. The goal of such actions is not an immediate assault, but rather to threaten Ukrainian positions from unexpected directions. However, even this new approach doesn’t guarantee success for the Russians. According to Zemlyanoy, the survival rate of such groups remains low. "Even when some fighters manage to infiltrate, they are usually detected and destroyed by drones or eliminated by Ukrainian units. Such groups are unable to break through the defenses. Only a slow, creeping advance is possible, resulting in very limited territorial gains at the cost of high losses per square kilometer," the expert emphasized.
