The crash of the An-22 Antey military cargo plane that crashed in the Ivanovo region of Russia on December 9 has been widely reported. As can be seen from the footage circulated on Telegram channels, the plane broke up in mid-air and crashed to the ground. Seven people on board, including crew members, died. Parts of the crashed plane fell into a reservoir. The incident occurred when the plane was performing a test flight after repairs. This aircraft, manufactured in 1974, was the last An-22 in service with the Russian Air Force.

The An-22 Antey is a Soviet military transport aircraft developed in Kyiv in the 1960s. It first flew on February 27, 1965.

Serial production began in 1966, with operational service starting in 1969. At the time, the An-22 was the world’s largest turboprop aircraft. TASS news agency reported that the An-22 crash occurred in the area of the Uvod Reservoir, where fragments of the aircraft were found on the water. Law enforcement agencies told the outlet that the aircraft had been performing a scheduled test flight after repairs. According to preliminary information, the pilots attempted until the last moment to steer the falling aircraft away from populated areas, directing it towards the Uvod Reservoir, which helped prevent casualties on the ground. An-22 "Antey" is the largest turboprop aircraft in the world. A special commission has been dispatched to investigate the cause of the tragedy. The Ministry of Defense confirmed the crash and reported that the aircraft went down in an uninhabited area.

The crash is an irreparable loss for Russia’s military transport aviation. This particular aircraft, built in 1974, was the last operational An-22 in the military fleet — a unique heavy turboprop transport with no equivalents anywhere in the world. Its operation, requiring the highest level of expertise, had become increasingly challenging due to the aircraft’s age. The aircraft can carry up to 80 tons of payload, with a maximum takeoff weight of about 250 tons. It is powered by four NK-12MA turboprop engines, each generating approximately 15,000 horsepower.

The An-22 was a pioneering super-heavy transport aircraft, paving the way for larger models such as the An-124 Ruslan and the An-225 Mriya.

The Russian defense ministry said final conclusions will be made after the wreckage is examined and the flight recorders are decoded. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
