Iran’s deputy foreign minister said on Wednesday the crucial waterway of the Strait of Hormuz "is open." According to Associated Press speaking on UK’s ITV news, Dr Saeed Khatibzadeh said that while the strait was open, civilian vessels must seek guidance from the Iranian authorities to "securely pass the strait." That guidance is needed because Iran mined the waterway, along with "other arrangements that Iran made for the time of war" which are still in place, he said. Khatibzadeh said Iran has maps of the mined area to ensure the safe passage of vessels. Semiofficial news agencies in Iran published a chart Thursday suggesting the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard put sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz during the war — a message that may be intended to pressure the United States. Iran had closed the Strait of Hormuz again on Wednesday in response to Israeli attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
