The US Army Will Receive the First Prototype of the New Generation M1E3 Abrams Tank by the End of the Year

The US Army expects to receive a preliminary prototype of the new M1E3 Abrams main battle tank by the end of 2025.

This is the first physical prototype in the modernization program, which is intended to replace the current M1A2 SEPv3/SEPv4 line with a lighter, more mobile, and technologically advanced platform, The War Zone reports.

The M1E3 will serve as the basis for the next generation of tanks, focusing on combat operations in the 2040s.

Its development takes into account the experience of the war in Ukraine, including the need for reduced weight, improved survivability, and digital integration.

The new vehicle is expected to have a hybrid propulsion system, active protection, and an automated charging system.

The development is led by General Dynamics Land Systems, which also developed the AbramsX prototype. Although the M1E3 is not a direct continuation of the AbramsX, many of its technologies can be adapted for the production vehicle.

The M1E3 program officially kicked off after the M1A2 SEPv4 project was canceled in 2023. The Army decided to focus on creating a fundamentally new platform rather than modernizing the existing one.
