US Army soldier in Texas with a top security clearance has been charged with handing over sensitive information about the military’s main battle tank in exchange for Russian citizenship.
Taylor Adam Lee, 22, was arrested on charges of attempted transmission of national defense information to a foreign adversary and attempted export of controlled technical data without a license.
John A Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for national security, said Lee sought to “transmit sensitive national defense information to Russia” regarding the operation of the M1A2 Abrams – the main battle tank used by the US Army.
In June, Lee is said to have gone online and offered assistance to Russia in exchange for Russian citizenship. In the alleged messages, Lee, who holds a top-secret security clearance, allegedly “transmitted export-controlled technical information” about the M1A2’s operation and vulnerabilities.
“The USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses,” Lee reportedly said. “At this point, I’d even volunteer to assist the Russian Federation when I’m there in any way,” he added.
In addition to the alleged violation of the Espionage Act, which prohibits the unauthorised handling of information relating to national defence, Lee is also accused of trying to export controlled technical data without a licence, which breaches the Arms Export Control Act. According to court documents, the government is seeking to detain him without bail.
The Department of Justice said Lee had made his first appearance in federal court and it is not yet known whether he has hired a lawyer. Federal prosecutors said Lee attempted to hand over information to someone he believed to be a Russian intelligence officer in exchange for Russian citizenship.
Lee was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso where he held a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information security clearance, the Justice Department said. In June, he allegedly transmitted information regarding the M1A2 Abrams tank online and offered assistance to Russia, stating, "the USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses."
"At this point I’d even volunteer to assist the Russian Federation when I’m there in any way," he allegedly said. Roman Rozhavsky, assistant director of the FBI’s counterintelligence division, said Lee then shared a memory card containing documents and information about the tank and other US military operations during an in-person meeting in July with someone he believed to be a Russian intelligence officer. “Soldiers who violate their oath and become insider threats will absolutely be caught and brought to justice, and we will continue to protect Army personnel and safeguard equipment,” said Brigadier General Sean Stinchon, the commanding general of Army Counterintelligence Command.
