US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning that Washington could slap sweeping 50% tariffs on any nation providing military support to Iran. In a signed post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump declared that any country supplying weapons to Iran would face immediate economic consequences, stating that all of their exports to the US would be hit with a 50% tariff, without exceptions or special treatment. The US president wrote: “A Country supplying Military Weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed, on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, 50%, effective immediately. There will be no exclusions or exemptions!” Trump’s message is widely seen as directed at major powers such as Russia and China. This announcement comes shortly after the Supreme Court of the United States dealt a major blow to one of Trump’s key trade mechanisms, effectively limiting his ability to use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tailored tariffs. In response, Trump has been exploring alternative legal pathways to reinstate similar trade measures, though it remains uncertain which authority he would rely on to enforce this latest threat. Trump said in a separate Truth Social post that “there will be no enrichment of uranium” and that many of the 15 points in the U.S. peace proposals have already been agreed. He added that the US and Iran will discuss tariffs and sanctions relief. On Tuesday, Trump declared that a ceasefire agreement had been reached with Iran just hours before a deadline he had set, which he had warned could otherwise lead to major escalation, although he did not provide detailed terms of the arrangement. US Vice President JD Vance later characterized the truce as unstable, calling it “fragile,” and cautioned Tehran ahead of planned discussions in Pakistan later in the week. Vance also stated that, as part of the understanding, Iran had agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump had previously urged Tehran to restore access to the strategic waterway, accusing it of “holding the global economy hostage” and tying its reopening to the broader ceasefire framework. According to Vance, the deal involved Iran reopening the key maritime route in return for the United States and its partners halting military strikes. He added that Washington believed it had largely fulfilled its core military aims and expressed cautious optimism that the conflict could soon wind down. He further claimed that although Iran’s foreign minister had responded constructively to US demands, certain factions within Iran were allegedly circulating misleading narratives online. Vance warned that the United States still retained further measures it could deploy if negotiations break down, even if those options had not yet been used, while stressing that a lasting agreement was still achievable if both sides engaged sincerely.
