The Iranian authorities have crossed a new red line in digital repression. For the first time since the protests began, the regime has begun military-style jamming of the Starlink satellite internet service, cutting off protesters’ last line of communication with the outside world. According to the American Forbes , Iran deployed military jammers as part of a systematic operation: initially, about 30% of traffic was disrupted, and within a few hours, more than 80% of connections.
Experts emphasize: this has never happened before. Previously, Starlink remained a plan B for activists and protesters when the authorities shut down the regular internet. Now the regime is trying to shut down this option as well.
Starlink is officially banned in Iran, but according to Iran Wire and The Times of Israel, tens of thousands of terminals are operating illegally in the country. These terminals enabled the transmission of protest video, coordination, and censorship. Now the regime is attacking the very foundation of this system. The jamming of GPS signals, which began after the 12-day war with Israel last summer, allowed Iran to locally "blind" satellite terminals, creating zones of near-total digital silence.
Digital security experts are calling this an act of desperation. According to analyst Simon Migliano, it’s a "crude instrument for suppressing dissent" that is causing colossal damage to the country. The cost is $1.56 million in losses every hour the internet is down. Meanwhile, according to NetBlocks, the national network has been operating at around 1% of normal for over 60 hours. Analysts emphasize that the Iranian regime has demonstrated its willingness to completely isolate the country, even at the cost of economic collapse, just to maintain power. This demonstrates how dire the situation is for the authorities.
Recall, anti-government protests have erupted across all 31 of Iran’s provinces in a wave of unrest that marks the biggest challenge to the regime in years.
An ongoing communications shutdown, which experts say is unprecedented in its scale, was imposed by authorities on Thursday and has mostly isolated the country from the outside world amid the deadly unrest.
