A senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London has said a "deal was never on the cards" at the Alaska summit and that it was "clearly a victory for Putin".
According to Associated Press in an interview with the Associated Press, Nigel Gould-Davies said there was a "clear underlying incompatibility in the way that the two leaders are framing the problem of the war."
He said Trump’s "urgent intention is to achieve a cease-fire" while Putin wants the "root causes" to be addressed.
"That’s code for a much larger geopolitical agenda that would not only in effect pave the way for Ukraine’s subordination to Russia, but bring about some longer term, larger restructuring of European security on Russia’s terms," he explained.
Gould-Davies added that Trump was “shifting towards Putin" in saying, since the summit, that a peace agreement should be reached before a ceasefire.
Before the summit Trump and Ukraine’s European allies had been calling for a ceasefire ahead of any negotiations.
Gould-Davies called it a "profound worry" that negotiations might take place while fighting continued and that peace might only be achieved "once a much larger geopolitical agreement has been reached."
