Russian soldier Yevgeny Ushannov has published a candid video message in which he admitted that he fled the front lines due to inhumane treatment and fears for his life. He said that the command not only left him without basic support, but also actually threatened him with physical violence.
According to Ushannov, he spent almost a month on a combat mission, being in a "fortified position", without normal supplies and medical care.
" I was on a mission for 25 days. I was in a fortified position. Yesterday, June 28, I left my location, because in 25 days they dropped me off maybe four times to eat, and even then only two bars. No water, no medicine ," he said. He also noted that relations between commanders and subordinates in the Russian army are built on fear and humiliation. " The attitude is simply insulting, threatening. There are all the recordings of how commanders bully and threaten our soldiers over the radio ," he added. The occupier told how he and his fellow soldiers went to get food from the nearest settlement, where there was a neighboring unit. However, instead of help, they almost ended up captured by their own people. " They wanted to kill us here because we went to a populated area where our people were sitting. They just wanted to take us prisoner and torture us, thinking that we were Ukrainians ," the deserter said. He also admitted that he was afraid to return anywhere because he feared being killed by his own fellow soldiers. " I don’t know what to do next. If I go somewhere, move on, my own people will kill me, " Ushannov said. Ushannov’s story became yet another testimony to the state of the Russian army units in the occupied territories: lack of supplies, cruelty of commanders and fear within their own units.
Recall, every six months, approximately 130,000 Russian conscripts are called up for their year of service, where most of them will face sadistic hazing. In Russian, it’s called dedovshchina, a brutal internal army regime that began in Soviet times but is thoroughly embedded in modern military culture. Western militaries have worked hard to reduce bullying and hazing in the ranks with some, but not complete, success. But in Russia’s army, dedovshchina is a unique cultural staple and a formative part of the military identity. It’s a process that leaves Russian soldiers brutalized and traumatized; it in turn teaches them to inflict pain on others.
