The Ajax combat vehicle has entered service with the British Army, marking the first upgrade in nearly 30 years.
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the platform has achieved Initial Operating Capability – meaning it can now be deployed in combat units, according to the UK Defence Journal.
The vehicle has undergone extensive testing, including over 20,000 rounds fired from its 40mm cannon, training in extreme climatic conditions, and 42,000 km of trials in combat-like environments.
The Ajax (ASCOD) has six variants and will replace the outdated CVR(T) series, providing reconnaissance, command, and support capabilities.
The platform is equipped with advanced sensors, a digital network, and can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h.
The Spanish government is modernizing Ajax’s twin – the Pizarro IFV, which has been in service with the Land Forces since 2003.
The aim of the program is to upgrade Fase I vehicles to the Fase II standard, which will unify technical characteristics and increase combat effectiveness.
