Four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the war continues with no decisive end in sight. In this episode of World Talks, we are joined by Keir Giles of Chatham House, who explains why repeated waves of optimism in 2025 proved premature, and why neither the coalition backing Ukraine nor Russia’s backers have chosen to intervene decisively to end the conflict.
The discussion explores China’s growing leverage over Moscow, the narrative of an “inevitable Russian victory,” and whether the West is doing enough to shift the strategic balance. Giles argues that Russia has mortgaged its economy and its future to sustain the war, while Europe remains unprepared for the technological transformation of modern warfare. He also warns that Russia is already at war with Europe in every way short of open invasion.
