The defense forces have halted the enemy’s most active offensive. Now it’s necessary to build up our defenses and create the conditions for a counteroffensive, said Lieutenant Colonel Ruslan Gabinet, brigade commander of the 5th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade, which is fighting near Pokrovsk, in an interview with Radio Liberty. He spoke about the importance of rotating infantry units: "We need to replace those people who sit in positions for 200 days. This affects the resilience of the infantryman’s defense. We also need to set up additional positions."
He noted that there are not enough personnel to deploy additional positions. The reinforcements that are arriving are being sent to replace the previous infantrymen. The soldier explained that the brigade’s area of responsibility had been stable for six months. However, he said, in the summer, the green foliage and favorable weather conditions allowed the enemy to actively infiltrate and penetrate populated areas within the brigade’s zone. These areas then had to be cleared.
"There was even an incident: in one of the settlements, the enemy made a crude ‘flag,’ ran around with it, waved it, and reported that they had supposedly ‘liberated’ the settlement. Subsequently, the same enemy, carrying the same flag, was captured by our units operating in the area of responsibility," he said. Russians here often prefer to flee. According to him, the village had been completely cleared, another had been liberated as much as possible, and there was still no enemy presence there. "There are indications that if we manage to complete a number of measures, we’ll be able to move forward," the commander predicted. He also attributed the Russian army’s advancement to an inappropriate approach to the Special Western Unit and the large number of such cases. "The existing personnel in the army weren’t performing their tasks because they were ‘migrating’ from reserve battalion to reserve battalion, awaiting transfer to the desired unit. This resulted in a situation where no one had any personnel—they were there, but they weren’t," he explained, adding that a significant portion of the army was stationed in the Special Western Unit. Moreover, in his opinion, the occupying army is superior to the Defense Forces only in terms of manpower. He believes that parity has been achieved in UAV assets, there is no shortage of artillery ammunition, and the enemy has no advantage in terms of equipment. As a reminder, experts believe the occupiers view the Pokrovsk sector as key to advancing in the Donetsk region. Although the enemy is experiencing serious personnel shortages, and losses exceed replacements, as expert Igor Romanenko explained, the enemy still has a resource advantage. The Institute for the Study of War reported that the occupiers are attempting to push Ukrainian troops back from the border to create buffer zones. Such actions are being observed in the Kharkiv region. Russian troops have also intensified their infiltration efforts in the Kupiansk direction. Furthermore, expert Pavlo Lakiychuk explained that the balance of power is shifting on the southern front, with counter-attacks continuing. Although the Defense Forces continue to counterattack, the Ukrainian army’s offensive potential is limited, and the Russians are deploying additional reserves there.
