At least 40% of Russia’s oil export capacity has been halted and paralyzed over the past 3 days amid large-scale bombings by Ukrainian kamikaze drones, Reuters reported on Wednesday. Recent Ukrainian attacks targeted Russia’s Leningrad region, Russian ports in the Baltic Sea, Ust-Luga, Primorsk, and Vyborg, resulting in significant damage to the oil terminal infrastructure, while large fuel reserves are still burning. Officials said dozens of drones were intercepted over Leningrad region, but some penetrated defenses, causing damage to loading infrastructure and export facilities. The attacks highlight the escalation in both how often and how extensively Ukraine is deploying drone strikes, with certain assaults involving large waves of hundreds of drones. The targets have expanded beyond ports to include refineries, pumping facilities, and major pipeline systems, suggesting a deliberate campaign aimed at weakening Russia’s energy revenues and its wider war-supporting economy. In addition to the physical damage, these strikes have caused major logistical disruptions, resulting in delayed shipments, suspended loading operations, and lines of tankers accumulating offshore. Taken together, these impacts have brought a substantial part of Russia’s oil export network to a standstill, with some analysts characterizing the situation as a temporary shutdown.
