Ukrainian cyber units conducted an operation that obtained the coordinates of thousands of Russian positions by exploiting vulnerabilities in the Starlink satellite internet registration system . This was reported by The Times, citing those involved in the operation and military personnel.
According to the publication, this refers to the actions of the so-called 256th Cyber Assault Group, which worked alongside units on the front lines. After SpaceX, at Kyiv’s request, introduced mandatory registration of Starlink terminals in Ukrainian territory, unauthorized devices were blocked. This also affected Russian forces, who were allegedly using tens of thousands of illegally imported terminals to control drones and coordinate troops. Ukrainian hackers took advantage of the situation by creating a Telegram channel offering "assistance" in registering devices in exchange for cryptocurrency. Under the guise of technical support, they collected user data. "We started by asking for serial numbers, and then gradually worked our way up to GPS coordinates," said a group member with the call sign Goldfinger. As a result, it was possible to obtain data on more than 2,600 terminals. The collected coordinates were transmitted to Ukrainian military units and the Ministry of Defense. This allowed them to identify command posts, drone operator positions, shelters, and logistics hubs. One of the 128th Brigade’s intelligence officers noted that such data made it possible to quickly identify enemy positions and launch attacks. "Now we see where they are… and we are transmitting coordinates for destruction," he said. According to Ukrainian military officials, the operation had a tangible tactical impact. In the area of responsibility of one brigade, the intensity of Russian strikes decreased by approximately 45%. Furthermore, Russian troops are said to have often remained in exposed positions, either out of fear of admitting a leak or because of the difficulty of moving close to the front line. Starlink systems are actively used by both sides of the conflict for drone control, inter-unit communications, navigation, and operational coordination. "Since 2025, they’ve been using Starlink to control large drones… that’s given them an advantage," Goldfinger noted. After the terminals were blocked, Russian forces began to employ alternative solutions, including the creation of ground-based Wi-Fi bridges between positions, which also makes them more visible. According to The Times, Ukrainian cyber units also hacked the email accounts of Russian officials and businessmen, uncovered networks of cooperation with Western companies, and helped locate defense industry facilities. Some of these targets were subsequently attacked, including with long-range weapons. Military officials note that the role of digital technologies and automation in conflict is rapidly growing. "I see a picture where, in five years, people will be needed less and less. This is frightening," said one Ukrainian officer. It’s worth noting that Russian occupiers continue to seek alternatives to the Starlink system for controlling drones when attacking the Defense Forces’ immediate rear areas. According to Ukrainian military officials, the effectiveness of Russian Molniya drones has significantly declined since Russia lost access to Starlink. After the Russians lost access to the Starlink satellite internet network, Ukrainian forces achieved their greatest territorial gains in more than two years, recapturing approximately 400 square meters of territory.
