For the first time, Ukraine publicly revealed the successes of its rocket industry and confirmed plans to create a sovereign satellite constellation, write analysts at Defense Express.
"It’s unlikely the combat mission’s objective was to reach a specific altitude. This was the result of an unknown ballistic missile, apparently carrying a warhead, flying toward its target. This fits perfectly with another phrase: ‘We have missiles that almost no one knows about, but which are capable of striking enemy territory at ranges of up to 500 kilometers and flying at hypersonic speeds,’" analysts noted, commenting on MP Fedor Venislavsky’s report about the Ukrainian launch vehicle’s launch into space.
They added that hypersonic speeds here should be understood in the context of the development of ballistic missiles, which can travel a range of about 500 km and typically accelerate to speeds in excess of Mach 5 or 1,700 m/s. They conclude that Ukraine already possesses ballistic missiles of this class, although apparently not in significant quantities. At the same time, they note that "when exactly, for what purpose, and with what results these launches were carried out are still unknown."
It also became known that during the war, a rocket carrier was launched from a transport aircraft at an altitude of approximately 8,000 meters, which could potentially also be used to launch various types of spacecraft into orbit.
"In practice, launching a ballistic missile from an aircraft allows for overcoming the first and most difficult kilometers of flight, when atmospheric drag is very significant. Thus, an existing ballistic missile can achieve even greater range, but its size and weight will be limited by the capabilities of the launch vehicle. However, the impact on a ballistic missile’s range directly depends on the type of air launch used," the article states.
As a reminder, a photo of a prototype of the Ukrainian FP-7 tactical ballistic missile from FirePoint recently surfaced online. It is known to be similar to the American ATACMS, but 2.5 times cheaper. It is based on the missile developed for the S-400 system, but features a composite body and a new fuel delivery system.
FirePoint claims the missile is expected to be ready this summer. It will have a range of up to 850 km and be able to reach Moscow. The FP-7 is being developed as a weapon capable of penetrating Russian air defense systems, as well as a tool whose use does not require coordination with Ukrainian allies. And thus, with an existing ballistic missile, it is possible to achieve even greater range, but its dimensions and weight will be limited by the capabilities of the carrier. But the impact on the range of a ballistic missile directly depends on what type of "air launch" is used.
