Ukraine has stepped up the production and use of cheap decoy drones to harass Russian air defenses and allow attack drones to penetrate important targets behind the lines of the occupied territories and Russia, Forbes writes . At the same time, the Russian side is massively using its Gerbera decoys, covering the waves of Shaheds.
Decoys are nothing new. The idea dates back to the Cold War. But now, Western analysts write, they’ve been mass-produced at a low cost. Russian Gerbers are relatively inexpensive, appear on radar as attack drones, and are launched in batches to force Ukrainian air defense systems to waste valuable missiles and ammunition on decoys. Some Gerbers are equipped with electronic warfare elements and even small warheads for stealthy tactical strikes; others are simple "parodies" with radar reflectors that make them visible on radar. Ukraine quickly adopted this tactic . According to information analyzed by the authors of this article, plans are currently underway to mass-produce tens of thousands of long-range drones per year, and decoys are being added to them. Ukrainian engineers and small local companies have already established the production of inexpensive decoys made from plastic pipes and foil that appear as large targets on radar. These decoys are used for reconnaissance, air defense deployment, and as a distraction while real attack drones target refineries, terminals, and power generation facilities. The effect on Russia is already noticeable : instead of using surface-to-air missiles sparingly, Moscow is now forced to use expensive interceptors, and their number and production are limited. With the Russian army experiencing a shortage of modern interceptors and air defense systems, using large numbers of decoys also makes economic sense. Every air-to-air missile or expensive anti-aircraft missile spent on a cheap decoy represents a blow to the occupiers’ capabilities the next time an attack drone arrives. In addition to their direct military effect, attacks using a combination of decoys and attack drones undermine the enemy’s logistics and fuel resources. Strikes against refineries and terminals exacerbate the fuel crisis within Russia and in the occupied territories. This is an additional means of exerting pressure on the regime, which is devoting colossal resources to the war. Ukrainian developers claim that decoys will evolve, adding electronic reconnaissance elements, repeaters, and possibly armed versions.
recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced preparations for new, powerful strikes against Russia’s military and energy infrastructure. He made this statement following a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Headquarters, where Ukraine’s energy security and countering Russian attacks were the key issue.
