Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service or SVR announced that Ukrainian military forces intend to launch drones from Latvian territory against targets in Russia.

According to the information received, Kyiv does not intend to limit itself to using the air corridors provided to the Ukrainian Armed Forces by the Baltic states. Drones are also planned to be launched from these countries. The hope is that this tactic will significantly reduce flight times to targets and increase the effectiveness of terrorist attacks.

The Russian intelligence service claims that Ukrainian Armed Forces Unmanned Systems Force personnel are already stationed at military bases in Latvia, adding that "the coordinates of decision-making centers on Latvian territory are well known, and the country’s NATO membership will not protect terrorist accomplices from just retribution."

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže, commenting on the SVR statement, wrote on social media: “Russia is lying again. This time, the disinformation campaign against Latvia is being carried out by the SVR, or Foreign Intelligence Service. Fact: Latvia does NOT provide airspace for attacks on Russia. This has already been explained to Russian representatives several times”. Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs also stressed that “Russia is lying about Latvia allowing its airspace and territory to be used for attacks on Russia or any other country.”

Russian authorities have previously stated on numerous occasions that the Baltic states are providing their airspace for the flight of Ukrainian drones attacking targets within the Russian Federation.

Drones have flown into the Baltic states several times in recent months. Defense ministries in the Baltic states have emphasized that these were Ukrainian drones that had become disoriented due to Russia’s use of electronic warfare systems. After several Ukrainian drones flew into Latvia in early May, the country’s Foreign Ministry protested to Russia, noting, in particular, that Moscow’s aggressive war creates the risk of similar security incidents throughout the region. Drones in Latvian airspace led to a government crisis and the government’s resignation.

Recall, Russia’s war with Ukraine has begun to directly affect Northern European countries. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are launching drones almost daily against Russian oil refineries in the Leningrad region, and they are increasingly appearing in the airspace of the Baltic states and Finland. Russian z-public groups have claimed that these countries are unofficially allowing Ukraine to use their airspace for drone flights. There is no independent confirmation of this theory, and the Latvian government has officially denied such accusations. In Latvia, drone incidents have already led to political consequences: the government has resigned. We list the most notable drone incidents in Northern Europe over the past two months. The drone crashed near the village of Lavisos, approximately 30 kilometers from the Belarusian border. No one was injured in the incident.

The following day, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė confirmed that the drone was Ukrainian. "It’s connected to the operation the Ukrainians carried out that night against Russia," she stated. On the night of March 25, a Ukrainian drone crashed into the chimney of the Auvere Power Plant in Estonia. In Latvia, a drone crashed in the Krāslava region. In their official statements, the authorities emphasized that the drones had come "from the direction of Russia" and refrained from criticizing Ukraine.

"A serious battle took place last night, with Ukrainians repelling attacks on their country," said Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina.

"It must be emphasized that the goal was not to attack Estonia. According to our information, this was a counterattack by Ukraine on Russia, and the consequences of this attack have reached our border," said Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal. Two drones crashed in southeastern Finland. Authorities confirmed they were Ukrainian. Ukraine issued an official apology to Finland, stating that the drones "under no circumstances" could have been directed toward Finland. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry suggested that they deviated from their course due to Russian electronic warfare systems.
