Ukrainian military has shared video footage showing the operation to destroy Russia’s major Moskva cruiser that eliminated dozens of Russian servicemen in the Black Sea in 2022. The video released in Telegram app, captures the moment of the strike on the vessel, that was followed by a powerful explosion and the sinking of the ship. The destruction of the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet delivered a significant blow to Russia’s naval presence in the Black Sea. The operation was carried out on April 2022, two months after the start of Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian naval forces struck the vessel with two Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles fired from a coastal defense system. The attack caused severe damage, and by the following day, April 14, the vessel had sunk in the Black Sea. The cruiser reportedly carried up to 500 personnel, though Russia disclosed little about casualties, officially confirming only 17 deaths and attributing the loss to an onboard fire and ammunition explosion exacerbated by rough seas. At the time, the Neptune missile system used in the strike was among Ukraine’s newest domestically developed weapons. In the years since, it has continued to play a key role in targeting Russian military assets during the full-scale invasion. Measuring over 186 meters in length, the Moskva was heavily armed, capable of carrying up to 16 cruise missiles along with a wide array of other weaponry. Over the years, it had been involved in key operations, including Russia’s 2008 war in Georgia, the blockade of Ukrainian naval forces during the 2014 annexation of Crimea, and the protection of Russian military assets in Syria between 2015 and 2016. Originally launched in 1979 and commissioned in 1982 under the name Slava, the ship was later renamed Moskva after a previous flagship bearing that name was retired in 1996.
