Ukraine’s navy units have struck Russian-linked sanctioned tanker in the Black Sea with two naval kamikaze drones, the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces reported on Wednesday. At the time of the strike, the vessel Marquise was drifting about 210 kilometers of the city of Tuapse with its AIS signal turned off, likely waiting to receive cargo from another ship at the sea. “The vessel was drifting without an AIS signal and was likely awaiting loading at sea from another ship,” the General Staff said. The Marquise is a tanker allegedly used by Russia for the illegal transportation of petroleum products. It sails under the flag of Cameroon and has a cargo capacity of over 37,000 tons. The strike targeted the stern section of the tanker, specifically the engine room and the propeller-rudder assembly. Ukrainian military officials stated that the extent of the damage is still being assessed. MARQUISE has been placed under sanctions by multiple governments, including Ukraine, the U.K., the European Union, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Canada. Earlier, Ukraine’s head of defense intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, recently stated that two Russian Su-30SM fighter aircraft were destroyed over the Black Sea. According to him, the attack was carried out by Magura-class naval drones equipped with American AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.
