A Ukrainian drone strike on a dam in Russia’s Belgorod region caused massive flooding and seriously hampered the logistics of Russian troops near the Ukrainian city of Vovchansk. Some Russian army units were cut off from the main forces after water from the Belgorod Reservoir inundated their trenches, The Telegraph reports.
"The main thing is that the enemy’s logistics have become significantly more complex. The units that crossed the Seversky Donets are effectively cut off from their rear areas. We are expecting a replenishment of the prisoner of war fund," stated a representative of the 16th Army Corps of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The commander of the Ukrainian drone forces, Colonel Robert Brovdy, confirmed that the Ukrainian army was behind the operation, which was codenamed "Hold on, Dam!" "The Belgorod Reservoir burst today. Since that magical jolt, the water level has dropped by a meter," he wrote on Facebook, adding ironically that "the dam is slightly damaged."
According to Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, the drone strike occurred between October 24 and 26. He warned that if the structure were completely destroyed, approximately 1,000 local residents could be at risk.
However, video footage from the scene, verified by analysts, shows that water continues to flow out uncontrollably, flooding coastal areas and Russian military fortifications.
Before the attack, Russian troops were actively fortifying their positions near Vovchansk, taking advantage of the warm weather that had dried up the rivers and facilitated the movement of equipment. Now, however, the water level in the Seversky Donets has risen sharply, turning the front line into a swampy trap.
The incident occurred amid escalating fighting in eastern Ukraine. In these circumstances, the Ukrainian army may also attack Belogorsk.In recent days, Russian forces have entered part of the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region, but Ukrainian command denies Moscow’s claims of a "complete encirclement" of the city.
In his address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the "difficult situation" in Pokrovsk but emphasized that Ukrainian troops are holding the line. "There is fierce fighting everywhere, but success in Pokrovsk is critical for the entire front," he stated.
Meanwhile, Russian military bloggers ridiculed Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov’s statement about the alleged "encirclement," calling it an attempt to please Vladimir Putin. The propagandists were particularly displeased by the assertion that the Russian army allegedly encircled 31 Ukrainian battalions in the Pokrovsk-Mirnograd agglomeration and almost the same number in Kupyansk.
