Ukraine’s military intelligence has knocked out Russia’s last operational ferry in the Kerch Strait, dealing another blow to Moscow’s logistics network supporting Russian-annexed Crimea Peninsula. According to the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, the ferry Slavyanin was rendered inoperable during a night-time drone strike carried out between April 5 and 6. The attack was conducted by specialists from the agency’s Active Operations unit, who used unmanned aerial vehicles to target what they described as the last remaining railway ferry still functioning for Russian forces in the area. The vessel had been a key asset for sustaining Russian troops in occupied Crimea, regularly transporting fuel supplies, military hardware, weapons, and ammunition across the strait. Ukrainian intelligence emphasized the ferry’s strategic importance, noting that its loss further complicates Russia’s already strained supply routes to the peninsula. The strike follows earlier operations in mid-March, when Ukrainian forces targeted Russian naval assets in the same region. During that attack, two vessels were hit – Slavyanin was reportedly disabled at the time, while another ship, Avangard, sustained damage. The Kerch Strait ferry system had already been operating under strain due to previous Ukrainian strikes, heightened security measures, and reduced capacity compared to pre-war levels. Its destruction or incapacitation marked another step in Ukraine’s broader campaign to isolate Crimea logistically by targeting both fixed infrastructure, such as the Crimean Bridge, and mobile transport assets like ferries. As a result, Russian supply routes to Crimea became even more dependent on longer overland corridors through occupied southern Ukraine, increasing vulnerability and transit times for military and civilian logistics. Crimea Peninsula was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. Kerch Bridge, also known as the Crimean Bridge, connects mainland Russia to Crimea across the Kerch Strait and serves as the main route for road and rail transport of military supplies, fuel, and civilian goods. Since 2022, the bridge has been targeted multiple times by Ukraine using a combination of explosives, naval drones, and missile strikes. These attacks have caused varying degrees of damage, including the destruction of road sections, disruption of rail traffic, and temporary closures for repairs and security inspections. One of the most significant incidents occurred in October 2022, when a large explosion damaged parts of the bridge, leading to partial collapse of road spans and a suspension of traffic. Another major strike in July 2023 further damaged the structure and forced restrictions on rail movement, affecting fuel and logistics flows into Crimea.
