Today, Ukraine’s main strategy is to slow the Russian advance and gradually deprive them of resources. Conditions on the frontline do not allow for large-scale counterattacks. This opinion was expressed by the well-known Ukrainian military analyst Alexander Kovalenko in an interview with the German publication Kronen Zeitung .
The expert spoke frankly about the situation on the three hottest sections of the front. According to him, the situation in Kupyansk appears better than in other areas. The occupiers’ advance has been halted, and the Ukrainian Defense Forces are currently conducting a cleanup operation in the city. Kovalenko emphasized that the occupiers have certain areas of local control, but there is no talk of a complete takeover of Kupyansk. The situation in Pokrovsk and nearby Myrnohrad is far more complex . The expert explained that Ukraine’s current objective is to slow down the enemy’s advance as much as possible while simultaneously inflicting maximum damage. However, he acknowledged that, given the current state of affairs, holding this defensive point for long is likely impossible. " Given the current situation in which the defenders of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad are operating, we will not be able to maintain control of this region in the long term. The only question is when we will have to completely withdraw ," Kovalenko said. The third area, where things are "very complicated," is Huliaipole. According to the expert, Russian sabotage groups have already begun infiltrating the eastern suburbs along the Gaichur River. They are attempting to enter the city via vulnerable routes and gain a foothold on the eastern outskirts. Kovalenko explained that Russia is intensifying its assaults in December, so the eastern bank will likely be lost. However, with a competent defense, the western bank can be transformed into a powerful fortified line. Then, he explained, Gaichur will become a natural line of defense, and the occupiers on the eastern side will fall " into a real trap, where they will be destroyed without pause ." The analyst emphasized that talking about a counteroffensive is currently impossible. Ukraine is forced to maintain a defensive strategy.
