The Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to stop the advance of Russian troops and hold the front line, despite the enemy’s significant advantage.
According to the head of the EU Military Committee, General Sean Clancy, flexibility, the introduction of new solutions and effective interaction between units played a key role in this. This also creates favorable conditions for Ukraine’s counterattack along the front. "We all remember the first days, when Russian tanks were advancing on Kyiv not far from here. And the journey from that moment to Ukraine’s current state is an outstanding example of its achievements on the battlefield. I know many generals here can speak of resilience, as well as at the tactical or even operational level. But, in my view, the most important elements of Ukraine’s achievements are innovation, integration, and adaptability," he emphasized.
According to the general, despite limited resources and a smaller force compared to the Russian army, Ukraine was able to achieve results thanks to its ability to quickly implement new approaches, pool efforts, and quickly adapt to changes on the battlefield. "The Ukrainians weren’t afraid to take risks and acted quickly and on a large scale. And that’s what allowed them to effectively create the current conditions—where the front line is practically motionless," Clancy said. Speaking about Ukraine’s prospects for joining the European Union, he noted that the final decision depends on the member states, but that there is now a noticeable acceleration of the process and a broad consensus among them. "We see an accelerated roadmap and a very broad consensus among EU member states regarding Ukraine’s membership," the general emphasized. He also added that Ukraine is already considered an important strategic partner of the EU and is participating in key initiatives, including the €150 billion SAFE program.
"If it were up to me… I would be very optimistic: if willpower is transformed into achievement, it will happen soon," the general concluded. Ukrainian forces have escalated their counteroffensive operations in the country’s southern regions, particularly within Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The surge in Ukrainian counterattacks in the south demonstrates a continued push to regain control of occupied territories. Ukraine continues to strengthen its position in the war with Russia, achieving tactical, operational, and strategic gains on the battlefield, the Institute for the Study of War said. Ukraine has also achieved tactical and operational successes that are increasingly producing strategic effects as winter transitions into spring, ISW said.
Ukrainian forces began making significant tactical gains in southern Ukraine in late January 2026, triggering a chain reaction along the front line and forcing Russian troops to choose between defending against Ukrainian counterattacks or redeploying personnel and resources to other sectors, the report said. Russia has repeatedly promoted narratives that Ukraine’s front line is on the verge of collapse in an effort to persuade Western partners to make concessions Moscow cannot achieve militarily, the report said. Recent Ukrainian gains indicate that such a collapse is not imminent.
