Ukrainian intelligence officers have captured two Russian servicemen in Kupyansk city in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region. The hostages were taken by the 151st Separate Reconnaissance Battalion during mopping up of the private sector in Kupyansk. The battalion is part of the 10th Army Corps of the Ground Forces under the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Video footage of the operation shared in social media shows Ukrainian intelligence forces breaking into a semi-destroyed building and capturing Russian soldiers who surrendered voluntarily. Earlier, Ukrainian National Guard’s 13th “Khartia” Brigade raised a Ukrainian flag Kupyansk city hall. Separately, the brigade destroyed 70 Russian soldiers in an operation to repel a massive Russian attack in the Kharkiv region. The operation to repel the Russian attack was carried out by Khartia brigade’s infantry, drone operators, artillery units, and other elements. Being a strategic city, Kupiansk has been the venue of fierce fighting in the past few months, especially in mid-December, with encircled Russian units offering tough resistance as Ukrainian forces pushed to destroy them. It should be recalled that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last month, shared a video filmed near Kupyansk outskirts, where he told troops that gaining on the Kupiansk sector was crucial in strengthening Ukraine’s position in peace negotiations with Russia. Zelenskiy’s visit to the city was also aimed at countering Russian claims that Moscow troops had captured or encircled the city. Fighting across Ukraine’ s frontline remains tense, with active combat recorded near Kharkiv to the east in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
