As the death toll in Iran rises and the Iranian regime intensifies its crackdown, the US administration is discussing a wide range of measures, from diplomatic pressure to cyberattacks and military options.
Axios reports , citing unnamed US officials familiar with the discussions, that the discussions have intensified amid growing protests and a rising death toll, as well as following US President Donald Trump’s public statements about his readiness to use military force if Iranian authorities begin mass killings of protesters. "President Trump is considering all options, but no decision has been made yet ," one U.S. official said. According to a second source, military strikes against Iranian regime targets were indeed considered during the discussions. However, most of the measures proposed at this stage do not involve the direct use of force. These include demonstrative steps to deter the regime, including the announcement of the deployment of a carrier strike group to the region, cyberattacks against Iranian regime infrastructure, and information and psychological operations. Officials acknowledged that predicting Trump’s final election is difficult.
Trump is considering a number of potential military options for action in Iran, US administration sources said to CNN. "It appears that people were killed who shouldn’t have been killed. These are violent acts, if you call them leaders. I don’t know if their leaders are simply ruling by violence, but we’re looking at this very seriously," Trump told reporters Sunday aboard Air Force One. "The military is looking into this, and we’re looking at some very serious options. We’ll make a decision."
According to officials, the president was presented with a range of options, primarily aimed at destroying Tehran’s security forces used to suppress the protests. These options include cyber operations against the Iranian military or regime targets, which could undermine efforts to suppress the protests, one official said. Options also include new sanctions against regime figures or sectors of the Iranian economy, such as energy or banking.
The administration has also explored the possibility of providing Starlink-like technology to improve internet connectivity in Iran, helping protesters bypass the information blockade.
Trump is not expected to send US troops to the country, and another official said no major troop or equipment movements are planned at this time.
Some administration officials fear that US actions could exacerbate tensions in the Middle East or backfire on the US itself in its attempt to aid the protest movement.
According to officials, a number of different agencies were involved in preparing the president’s options. More formal briefings are expected next week, including on Tuesday, when Trump is expected to convene senior national security officials to discuss further action.
According to reports from Tehran, as well as US and Israeli officials, internet access remains disrupted, and security forces are intensifying their crackdown. Israeli and American sources told Axios that the real death toll is likely significantly higher than the official figure from the human rights organization HRANA.
