Ukraine’s president said all but two points of a 20-point peace plan have been agreed with the US.
According to Associated Press speaking to reporters after meeting with US President Donald Trump on Sunday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the issues of territory and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remain unresolved.
On security guarantees, Zelenskyy said he has asked Trump to extend them for up to 50 years, noting that the current proposal includes only 15 years.
“We would very much like to review the possibility of security guarantees for 30, 40 or 50 years. That would be a historic decision by President Trump. The president said he will think about it,” Zelenskyy said.
Trump on Sunday insisted Ukraine and Russia are “closer than ever before” to a peace deal as he hosted Zelenskyy at his Florida resort.
However, he acknowledged the negotiations are complex and could still break down, potentially allowing the war to drag on for years.
Trump’s remarks came after the leaders met for talks following what he described as an “excellent” two-and-a-half-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose invasion of Ukraine launched the war nearly four years ago.
Trump said he believes Putin still wants peace, even as Russia carried out another round of attacks on Ukraine while Zelenskyy traveled to the United States for the latest negotiations.
According to Zelenskyy, Trump said he discussed all 20 points of the peace plan with Putin.
“This is not the first time Putin has said one thing and done another. For us, it is important that words match actions,” Zelenskyy told reporters.
