The US has sent a large number of refueling aircraft to Europe to provide President Donald Trump with options amid the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran, two anonymous US officials told Reuters on Monday. The officials did not reveal the exact number of US aircraft that were heading to the Middle East. The officials said that Nimitz aircraft carrier, which can hold up to 5,000 personnel and over 60 aircraft and fighter jets, was sent to the Middle East. The deployment signals Washington’s efforts to boost its air defences for potential protraction of the war between Iran and Israel. According to AirNAv flight tracking website, over 31 refueling aircraft of US Air Force, mainly KC-135s and KC-46s left the United States on Sunday. The website revealed that the US military aircraft landed in Ramstein air base in Germany and airports in the United Kingdom, Greece and Estonia. According to Eric Schouten at Dyami Security Intelligence, the sudden deployment of over a dozen US military aircraft was a “clear sign of strategic readiness” rather than a business usual. "Whether it’s about supporting Israel, preparing for long-range operations, logistics is key, this move shows the U.S. is positioning itself for rapid escalation if tensions with Iran spill over,” the expert noted. Tension heightened in Middle East after Israel launched large-scale air raids on Iran, targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and killing high-level military officials and nuclear experts. Iran responded by firing a barrage of missile and drone attacks. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, revealed on Monday that he had ordered the deployment of additional defence forces to the Middle East, without providing further details.
"Protecting U.S. forces is our top priority and these deployments are intended to enhance our defensive posture in the region," Hegseth worte on X social media platform.
