The Vienna Philharmonic held its annual New Year’s Concert, watched by approximately 50 million people around the globe.
The decades-long tradition not only showcased beloved works by Austrian composer Johann Strauss but also introduced new pieces by some unexpected composers. One of them was the “Rainbow Waltz” by American composer Florence Price – the first African American woman to gain recognition as a classical music composer in the United States.
For the first time in the event’s history, the orchestra was conducted by Canadian maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
