Protesters in the Georgian capital on Saturday clashed with police at a rally calling for the resignation of the current government. Protesters were seen trying to break into the presidential palace. Police fired gas at anti-government protesters to keep them away from the presidential palace in Tbilisi. The protesters are waiving Georgian and EU flags. Tens of thousands of people gathered in the Freedom Square heeding the opposition’s calls to protest local elections held today. Earlier, jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili urged supporters to protest on election day for what he called the "last chance" to save Georgian democracy. Ahead of the protests, Georgian authorities pledged a tough response to those it cast as seeking "revolution". The ruling Georgian Dream party is facing its first electoral test since a disputed parliamentary poll a year ago that triggered widespread protests in the country.
