The Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with units of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces, have reported that on the night of 5 March, they successfully struck Russian positions located on the Sivash drilling platform at the Holitsynske gas field in the Black Sea, Euromaidan Press reports.
Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil fields, refineries, tankers, and fuel depots are gradually degrading the Russian army’s fuel supply and the export revenues that sustain its invasion of Ukraine. The platform had served as an enemy observation post, communications relay, and deployment site for electronic warfare and short-range air defense systems.
It enabled control over strike drones targeting infrastructure in the Odesa and Mykolaiv oblasts and posed a serious threat to civilian shipping. As a result of the operations using naval unmanned drones and aviation UAVs, Ukrainian forces destroyed enemy command and communication assets and inflicted significant personnel losses. Such operations gradually degrade Russian fuel supplies for the army and reduce export revenues that finance the invasion of Ukraine.
In addition to strikes on ground targets, the Ukrainian Naval Forces destroyed a Ka-27 helicopter, which attempted to land on the drilling platform, further weakening the enemy’s combat capabilities in the Black Sea. The Ka-27 is a Russian naval multi-role helicopter, known in NATO as Helix, Euromaidan Press says.
It is powered by two TV3-117VK turboshaft engines, each producing 2,200 hp. Its crew consists of 3 people, but can be expanded to 4. The empty weight is 6,100 kg, the normal takeoff weight is 11,000 kg, and the maximum takeoff weight reaches 12,600 kg. Its maximum speed is 270 km/h, its flight range is 800 km, and its service ceiling is 5,000 meters.
Ukraine continues to expand its deep-strike drone campaign against Russia, increasing both the range and frequency of attacks as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its fourth year. In 2025, Ukraine carried out 371 strikes on Russian territory, inflicting $13 billion in losses on Russia’s oil and gas sector.
Ukraine’s Security Service and Defense Forces struck the Russian frigate Admiral Essen in Novorossiysk, disabling its ability to fire Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukraine, according to a source in the SBU who spoke to Liga and separately to Suspilne. An hours-long fire aboard the ship points to severe internal damage and complicated work for the ship’s emergency crews, the source stated.
The strike is the latest blow to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, which relocated to Novorossiysk from occupied Sevastopol after Ukrainian strikes made that base untenable. Ukraine’s sustained campaign against the Black Sea Fleet has progressively stripped Russia of its ability to launch missile strikes from the sea.
Admiral Essen is a carrier of eight Kalibr cruise missiles. Russia has used the ship to strike Ukrainian cities since 2022 — including a strike that destroyed Mykolaiv’s regional council building on 29 March 2022. Ukraine previously struck the frigate in April 2022 using a Neptune anti-ship missile, the first combat use of the Neptune missile, and the ship continued operating. The SBU source indicated the 2 March damage is more consequential.
The UAV struck Admiral Essen’s midship superstructure, setting off a cascade of damage to its combat and defense systems, the SBU source said. The PK-10 decoy launchers on the sides of the superstructure — designed to deploy chaff and thermal flares against incoming missiles — detonated on impact. The TK-25 electronic warfare complex, which detects enemy radar emissions and deploys active jamming, was damaged. The ZR-90 Orekh target-illumination radars, part of the ship’s air defense missile guidance system, were struck. The main Fregat-M2M surveillance radar, responsible for long-range detection of air and surface targets, was likely damaged as well.
