What is the significance of U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Xi Jinping?
The whole world watches with the broader context of global great‑power rivalry in mind. Yet, one crucial issue is being overlooked: while global attention is focused on U.S.-China relations, Russia is using the moment to escalate its attacks on Ukraine.
“The Russians are doing this partly because they are under military and economic pressure, but also because they believe they can get away with it,” says Scott Lucas, Professor of American Studies at University College Dublin, speaking on World Talks.
Moreover, Ukraine is not at the center of the talks in Beijing. Meanwhile, China is steadily strengthening its position, putting questions of sovereignty – especially Taiwan’s – at the top of its priorities.
