After weeks of protests, Bulgaria’s government has collapsed – a development reporter Paweł Trzaskowski says is no surprise in a country plagued by unstable coalitions and constant snap elections.
Former PM Zhelyazkov insisted his cabinet would survive, but he lost support just before a no-confidence vote.
The unrest began with corruption scandals and a controversial budget proposal that would have raised taxes while boosting public-sector pay at the expense of small businesses. Even after the plan was withdrawn, protests grew, driven by anger at corruption and an out-of-touch political élite.
Trzaskowski notes that many young Bulgarians – long absent from politics – are now taking to the streets, demanding real change. But while the old political class tied to Borisov and Peevski has lost credibility, no new force has yet emerged to take its place.
