Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant: Ukraine’s deadliest bargaining chip | News in Depth

Matthew Day, Senior Online Editor at TVP World, explains why the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remains such a critical issue: it once supplied a large share of Ukraine’s electricity – and it becomes extremely dangerous if not properly maintained.

Although the plant is not generating power, it still requires a constant supply of electricity and cooling to prevent a nuclear accident. Fighting in the area has repeatedly disrupted those systems, raising safety concerns.

For Ukraine, the plant is a stolen national asset and a matter of sovereignty and pride. For Russia, it is a rare and valuable gain from the war – and something it can point to at home to justify its losses.

Matthew also notes the plant may never fully operate again, as the destruction of a nearby dam has reduced the cooling water needed to restart the reactors. In peace talks, proposals for shared or international control are unacceptable to Ukraine, while Russia treats the plant as leverage rather than something it would easily give up.
