Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin on Wednesday for talks with Germany’s chancellor Friedrich Merz and held virtual meetings with US President Donald Trump and other European leaders.
According to Associated Press The meetings come ahead of Friday’s planned summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
They were convened by Merz as a last-ditch effort to make sure Trump took the perspectives of European and Ukrainian leaders into consideration when he meets Putin to discuss a path toward ending Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy and the Europeans have been sidelined from the Alaska summit, raising fears among Kyiv’s European allies that discussions between Trump and Putin could exclude Ukraine or otherwise favor Moscow.
"Everything related to Ukraine must be discussed exclusively with Ukraine," Zelenskyy said from Berlin.
"We must prepare a trilateral format for talks. There must be a ceasefire – number one, there must be security guarantees, and they must be strengthened if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Alaska," he added.
The Ukrainian leader on Wednesday said his government has had over 30 conversations with partners ahead of the summit, but reiterated his doubt that Putin would negotiate in good faith.
French President Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, said Trump was “very clear” in a virtual meeting Wednesday with European leaders that the U.S. wants to achieve a ceasefire at the upcoming U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska.
