The Russians have reinforced their air defenses around Vladimir Putin’s residence in Valdai, deploying Pantsir-S1 systems. This means the enemy senses the slightest threat from Ukraine.
Israeli military observer David Sharp told Channel 24 what specific weapons Russia fears could attack Putin’s residence. He noted what exactly might have frightened the Kremlin leader and his entourage. Sharp noted that the decision to strengthen the air defense of the Russian leader’s residence is likely made directly by Putin himself or his inner circle of people.
One of the factors that forced the Russian leadership to take such a step may be the fate of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei , who was eliminated at the beginning of the US and Israeli operation against Iran.
"I don’t rule out that decision-makers in the Russian leadership, particularly Putin himself, have come to the conclusion that the Ukrainians might decide to act in a similar manner. Not even because they might try to eliminate Putin specifically, but because they could be guided by logic: if Putin leaves, everything in Russia will change radically," the military observer explained.
Accordingly, the Russians assume this scenario is possible and they fear it. Technically, in his opinion, the Ukrainians could deploy a large number of drones with sufficiently powerful warheads to Putin’s residence.
"This means the Kremlin is assuming that if such a possibility exists, Ukraine might suddenly agree to it. Therefore, Russia is preparing just in case," David Sharp noted.
At the same time, the concentration of air defense systems, in particular the Pantsir-S1, around Putin’s residence, without any direct threat from Ukraine, diverts Russian resources from certain areas of the front, exposing them, according to him.
"According to semi-insider information from Russian sources, the Pantsir-S1 is not the most effective air defense system among Russian short-range systems. The new Tor systems are more effective than the Pantsir," the military observer emphasized.
He added that the Pantsir-S1 will certainly be able to fire at drones, but it is not a defense against cruise or ballistic missiles. Therefore, the Russians likely intend to primarily counter the threat of unmanned aerial vehicles.
Earlier, Alexander Leonov, executive director of the Ukrainian Center for Applied Political Research "Penta," explained that Putin lives in constant fear: he avoids traveling even to loyal countries due to an ISS warrant, and has refused to visit Brazil and South Africa despite guarantees of immunity. His greatest nightmares are arrest and transfer to a third country, or physical elimination, as has happened to his allies. "Events in Venezuela and Iran, where the top leadership was eliminated, apparently not without betrayal within his inner circle, will only increase his paranoia. Putin’s suspicions will spread to his inner circle, so it’s entirely possible we’ll see more strange suicides or arrests around him. But most importantly, Russia is increasingly losing its ability to build alliances," Leonov explained. As a result of the full-scale invasion, the Collective Security Treaty Organization effectively collapsed: during the operation in the Kursk region, no country came to Russia’s aid, and it was forced to turn to North Korea. Losing influence in the Middle East, Latin America, Central Asia, and the Caucasus, Russia is degrading to the level of a regional power completely dependent on China.
