CHICAGO (WGN) — Two people have been shot in Douglass Park Thursday evening, with one of the victims reportedly just 14 years of age.
According to Chicago police, first responders rushed both victims to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
A significant police presence remains in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, where witnesses told WGN-TV that the shooting occurred while a football team practiced nearby.
Authorities say the shooting unfolded just after 7 p.m., injuring a male juvenile and another man whose age is unknown. CPD said the males were in the park when another male approached, fired his gun multiple times toward the victims.
Police say the 14-year-old victim endured a gunshot wound to the neck. The second victim also suffered a gunshot wound to the back.
North Lawndale resident Mark Carter told WGN-TV that he knows one of the victims.
“There were a lot of children out here. This is where a football team practices. There were lots of mothers out here with their children when it happened,” he said. “Police are prepping the scene. I am definitely numb right now.”
WGN-TV has learned that the shooter may be in police custody, though the department has not yet confirmed those details.
