Akron police seek public’s help in identifying fatal hit-and-run suspect

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – The Akron Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened early Saturday morning, just after midnight.

According to a press release from the Akron Police Department, the crash resulted in the tragic death of a 43-year-old woman.

Officers responded to the area of West South Street and the Ohio and Erie Canal Way Path crosswalk at Lake Shore Boulevard after it was reported that a pedestrian was hit by a car.

When first responders arrived at the scene, the victim was found to have suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead, the release said.

According to the release, the suspect vehicle is believed to be a silver Chevrolet Malibu. The vehicle reportedly fled the scene after the crash and was last seen heading east on W. South St.

“The vehicle may have sustained front-end damage, particularly to the headlight assembly, hood and possibly the windshield,” the release said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle or suspect is asked to contact the Akron Police Department at 330-375-2490.

“This was a senseless and heartbreaking tragedy. We need the community’s help to identify the person responsible and bring justice to the victim’s family,” Akron Chief of Police Brian Harding said.
