Early morning incident disrupts CapMetro Rail service

The cause of the incident isn’t yet known, but CapMetro’s post described it as “a freight train incident.” The incident occurred before 5:50 a.m.

CapMetro staff would be available at affected stations to assist riders with accessing bus service between the two stations “until further notice.”

We apologize for the inconvenience & appreciate your patience,” read its post.

Austin Police was at the scene, but jurisdiction on the incident likely falls to CapMetro’s new Transit Police Department, which just began on June 16. APD told KXAN that the incident involved a pedestrian.

At the scene, KXAN could see Austin-Travis County EMS also responded to the incident. As of 6:20 a.m., a freight train remained on the the tracks across Cherrywood Street near Clarkson Avenue.

At least three other rail crossings are also closed.

CapMetro’s red line reaches from downtown Austin to Leander.
