MACON COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) – An escaped inmate led law enforcement from several agencies on a multi-county chase in North Carolina Monday.
The Macon County Sheriff’s Office said they were informed by Clay County emergency services that a vehicle chase was headed their way around 2:30 p.m. Monday. According to a post by the sheriff’s office, the suspect was “an escaped inmate involved in an active shooter situation in Cherokee County and was expected to be armed and dangerous.”
Macon County deputies, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, stopped the vehicle on Highway 64 West and arrested the suspect after a brief standoff, according to reports.
No one at the scene was seriously injured.
“This incident could have easily ended in more tragedy,” said Sheriff Brent Holbrooks. “However, thanks to the quick actions of law enforcement, everyone is walking away from this scene safely. We are so thankful for the men and women who bravely put their lives on the line for their communities every single day.”
According to the sheriff’s office, Highway 64 is closed as the investigation continues. Traffic is being re-routed through West Old Murphy Road. Law enforcement is asking the public to avoid the area at this time.
