ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A St. Louis man appeared in court Monday and pleaded guilty to his role in a 2022 fatal home explosion.
Terrell Cooks (age not provided) was set to stand trial Monday but reached a plea agreement with the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Cooks pleaded guilty to eight felonies: three counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter, one count of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk of series injury or death, unlawful manufacture of an illegal explosive, possession of an illegal explosive, and possession of a controlled substance.
The explosion happened around 1:30 a.m. on June 17, 2022, in the 6600 block of Parker Road, located in unincorporated north St. Louis County.
Eighteen-year-old Damario Cooks and his cousin, 16-year-old Travell Eason, lived at the home and died in the explosions. Their friends, 21-year-old William Jones and 17-year-old Christopher Jones, were also killed. Another minor was injured.
Investigators determined Cooks and a co-defendant, Seneca Mahan, had directed the victims to manufacture explosive materials from fireworks, which led to a fire and the explosion.
Prosecutors agreed to reduce charges against Cooks from three counts of second-degree murder to three counts of involuntary manslaughter in exchange for a guilty plea. Cooks will be sentenced on Thursday, Sept. 4. Prosecutors have recommended to the court a sentence of 25 years in state prison.
Meanwhile, Mahan pleaded guilty in January to three counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk of serious injury or death, and unlawful manufacturing of an illegal weapon. Mahan will be sentenced on Friday, July 18.
