Harnett County school gets state-of-the-art gaming lab from Brightspeed

ERWIN, N.C. (WNCN) – Triton High School in Erwin is shaping up to be one of North Carolina’s newest hubs for competitive gaming and digital learning.

Brightspeed and Stay Plugged In are building a state-of-the-art esports gaming lab inside the Harnett County school’s media center. Through the school’s curriculum, students will be able to use the technology to learn video game coding, graphic design, and even streaming.

“They are going to get to learn a lot more than just gaming itself. They’ll apply real world tactics in this room that they can take on later in line,” said Joey Sines, with Stay Plugged In.

“Well, this provides an opportunity where you can combine stem, hands on learning, innovation, technology all in one place, in a way many students have never seen before,” said Steve Brewer, Brightspeed Director of Governmental Affairs.

Gaming is a multi-million-dollar industry. North Carolina is the home to some top gaming companies include Epic Games. School leaders hope having this technology will lead to promising careers for some students.

“I think it will be an exciting thing for the students to look forward to, to help them get more engaged into the school hopefully, and to hopefully open up some more career paths for them,” said Marshall Jones, Principal of Triton High School.

Installation of the technology in the new lab is set to be completion just in time for the start of the 2025–2026 school year. An official ribbon cutting is planned for August 11, once students are back on campus.
