WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Several law enforcement agencies around D.C., Maryland and Virginia are increasing their presence around religious institutions in response to the U.S. airstrikes in Iran.
On Saturday, President Donald Trump announced that the United States had intervened in Israel’s war against Iran, bombing three of Iran’s key nuclear sites.
Following the announcement, multiple law enforcement agencies from around the DMV took to social media to discuss local response, despite no known threats in their jurisdictions.
In D.C., the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) stated that officers will be working with local, state, and federal law enforcement to keep residents, visitors, and businesses safe.
MPD issued the following statement in regards to the matter:
The Metropolitan Police Department is closely monitoring the events in Iran. We are actively coordinating with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to share information and monitor intelligence in order to help safeguard residents, businesses, and visitors in the District of Columbia.
At this time, there are no known threats to the District. However, MPD has maintained an increased presence at religious institutions across the city.
We continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and help keep our community safe. If you See Something, Say Something. For emergencies or immediate threats, call 911. To report suspicious activity, contact MPD’s Real Time Crime Center at 202-727-9099, text 50411, or submit a report online at iwatch.dc.gov.”
Across the Potomac River in Fairfax County, the Fairfax County Police Department said that, in “light of recent international events,” the department is staying connected with regional and federal partners to monitor the situation and keep everyone.
“Out of an abundance of caution, you may see an increased police presence at certain locations, including religious institutions and public gathering areas,” FCPD wrote in a social media post.
In Maryland, the Anne Arundel County Police Department expressed a similar sentiment, issuing “a message of vigilance” in light of the ongoing events overseas.
“While there are no specific or credible threats to Anne Arundel County at this time, our Office of Homeland Security & Intelligence is closely monitoring the situation and remains in constant communication with federal, state, and local partners to ensure a coordinated and proactive security posture,” the department said. “As a precautionary measure, we have increased patrols at places of worship, community spaces, and other cultural and sensitive sites throughout the county.
In addition, AACOPD reminded residents to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to 410-222-4700 or by email to seeitsayit@aacounty.org.
Meanwhile in Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) said it is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of residents and is in close contact with faith leaders and religious organizations across the county.
“We recognize the diversity of our community and the significance of these events for many of our neighbors,” MCPD said, in part. “Out of an abundance of caution, officers will maintain visibility around religious institutions and places of worship.”
