(WPHL) — A female lifeguard is currently undergoing surgery at the hospital after she was impaled by an umbrella in Asbury Park.
PHL17 spoke to Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin Keddy, who stated that the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. near 3rd Avenue when the wind caught an umbrella and impaled the lifeguard in the left shoulder and penetrated through her back.
When Fire Department officials arrived, the lifeguard’s coworker was already administering aid.
Medical personnel were able to transport her on a beach stretcher and continue administering aid while they waited for an ambulance transfer.
The 6-foot beach umbrella had to be cut down before she was taken to the hospital, since it is dangerous to remove impaled objects without surgery.
Chief Keddy said the lifeguard was conscious, alert, and calm throughout the incident as she received care and was transported to the hospital.
At this time, Chief Keddy could not comment on the lifeguard’s condition in the hospital.
