WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Police in the District provided an update Wednesday to a triple shooting that happened earlier this week in Mount Vernon Square.
Just before 10:30 p.m. on June 30, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to the sound of gunshots in the 1200 block of 7th St. NW. There, they found a man, a woman and a 16-year-old boy who had been shot.
They were all rushed to nearby hospitals, where the man, unfortunately, died from his injuries.
He was later identified as 21-year-old Eric Tarpinian-Jachym of Massachusetts.
Investigators said multiple suspects got out of a car at the intersection of 7th and M streets NW and began firing at a group of people, striking Tarpinian-Jachym, the woman and the boy.
Several neighbors who spoke to DC News Now on Tuesday said they didn’t realize it was a shooting when they heard the rounds go off. Many of them thought it was fireworks ahead of the July 4 holiday later this week.
MPD said they do not believe Tarpinian-Jachym was the intended target.
The suspect vehicle has since been recovered, police noted. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact MPD at (202) 727-9099 or to text the department’s tip line at 50411.
