CLEVELAND (WJW) — A fire early Tuesday at a Cleveland Public Power substation has left large parts of downtown and the city’s near east side without electricity, affecting key public facilities and businesses.
According to Cleveland Public Power (CPP), a battery at the Lake Road substation overheated and caught fire just before 4 a.m.
After receiving clearance from Cleveland Fire, CPP began assessing the damage and identifying emergency repairs needed to restore service.
There is currently no timeline for when power will be restored, according to CPP.
Among the affected sites are Police Headquarters, Public Auditorium, Brown’s Stadium, Burke Airport, the Science Center, and the FBI Building. Residential complexes and commercial properties including University Circle Apartments, East Side Market, and Glenville Plaza are also impacted.
