Suspect charged in Kansas City double shooting that killed two brothers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A suspect has been charged in connection with a deadly double shooting that took the lives of two brothers Sunday afternoon, according to Kansas City police.

The shooting happened at a convenience store near Truman Avenue and Brooklyn Street. The two victims have been identified as 32-year-old Taylor Garrett and 35-year-old Byron Garrett.

It marked one of three homicides reported in Kansas City on Sunday alone.

Community advocates, including Rosilyn Temple, founder of Mothers in Charge, say the violence follows a heartbreaking trend that resurfaces every summer.

“We definitely need to try and get in front of this violence, we’ve seen it so many years,” Temple said.

This year so far is now Kansas City’s second-deadliest in the past five years, with 92 homicides recorded so far. Only 2023 was deadlier, setting a grim record in the city’s history of the deadliest year ever.

Temple said warmer weather often brings a spike in violence and urges the community to take action.

“When the weather change – comes more homicides occur – it’s a community problem – we have to come together to address these violent attacks that we’re having on each other in the community nothing is going to change,” Temple said.

Nearly 60% of homicide victims in 2025 have been under the age of 34, according to KCPD statistics.

As for Sunday’s shooting, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to release more details on the charges in the coming days.
