Swatting incident in Southern California prompts attempt to ID caller

Police are attempting to identify the person who reported a fake crime in Ventura County Monday afternoon.

Officers were sent to the 2100 block of Cheam Avenue after receiving a call reporting the potential crime, the Simi Valley Police Department stated in a news release.

“Certain aspects of the call alerted department personnel that the incident might be a false report, commonly referred to as a ‘swatting’ incident,” police said.

The officers took “tactical precaution” while responding to the incident and confirmed it was a false report, according to the news release. The residents were also found to be safe.

“This incident will be investigated further in an attempt to identify the perpetrator,” police said.

The Police Department reminded the public that reporting a false emergency can be a felony.
