Teen dies after 30-foot fall while hiking in Skamania County

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A teen from Happy Valley died in the hospital after falling 30 feet while on a hike in Skamania County Friday afternoon, officials said.

According to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, they received a 911 message over text reporting that someone had fallen at Falls Creek Falls, a hiking area near Carson, Wash.

Deputies, emergency crews as well as search-and-rescue volunteers responded to the area.

Arriving at the falls, they found a 17-year-old girl had plunged nearly 30 feet into Falls Creek.

Officials said she was successfully pulled from the creek, then taken by ambulance to a LifeFlight helicopter.

However, the teen died from her injuries at a hospital in the Portland area.

“The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest sympathies to the hiker’s family during this tragic loss,” the sheriff’s office said.
