CHICAGO (WGN) — A woman was taken into custody Friday morning after allegedly stabbing three children, one fatally, and setting fire to a Logan Square home.
Officers were called to the home on the 3600 block of West Palmer Street shortly after 9 a.m. on a report of a person with a knife. Police said a 45-year-old woman used a knife to attack three children in the home: a 4-year-old boy, a 10-year-old boy, and a 13-year-old girl.
All were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. The 4-year-old passed away from a stab to the chest, officials said. The 10-year-old boy was listed in serious condition with a stab wound in his right arm. The teen girl was critically wounded, with stab wounds on her face, chest and back, authorities said.
“It’s sad because it’s a day of celebration, the Fourth of July,” neighbor Juan Miranda said. “It’s sad.”
Investigators have not confirmed the relationship of the woman and children, but neighbors told WGN it was a mother who turned on her own kids.
As authorities investigated the attack, fire crews battled the fire at the home, which at one point was raised to two alarms. Crews were eventually able to get the flames under control by around 11:30 a.m. after it spread to a nearby home.
A 31-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man from the adjacent home were listed in fair condition at Stroger Hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation.
Three of the responding officers were also transported in fair condition to area hospitals to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Area Five detectives are investigating the attack and fire.
